Psychics not only use tarot cards, but also simple cards. In psychic readings it is called Cartomancy and it does what the tarot cards do, that is, the cards are used to read emotions. Around the 14th century, Cartomancy began with the introduction of cards. Many believe that the cards should never be used for any reason other than readings and that they should only be touched by the Cartomancer, or the owner of that deck of cards.
Fortune-telling became the most popular way of telling people’s fortunes from the 18th century onwards. Using a standard deck of cards, the fortuneteller uses all 52 cards in the deck. In France, the picket deck, which contains 32 cards, is used for Cartomancy readings. In this case, face cards, aces and cards 7-10 remain, as 2-6 are removed.
Each suit has a meaning, in relation to the tarot cards as follows:
- Clubs are equal to wands representing power.
- Spades are equal to swords, representing the intellect.
- Hearts are equal to cups, representing feelings.
- Diamonds are like coins, representing health or material matters
Until recently, the standard playing cards used in Cartomancy have taken second place to tarot cards in psychic readings. The tarot deck is made up of the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana has 21 trump cards and a Fool card, while the Minor Arcana contains 56 cards. The Minor Arcana consists of four pages, each containing a king, queen, knight and page, as well as the pip cards numbered 1-10.
